The Viva Florida Landscape Demonstration Garden Grant brings native beauty to parks, nature centers and other public spaces, creating educational opportunities while supporting local biodiversity.

The Albertus Cottage Wildflower Garden brought the landscape of this historic community landmark to life, perfectly demonstrating the ideals of our Viva Florida grant program. Led by the Village Improvement Association (VIA) Orange City Woman’s Club, in partnership with Orange City and Mockingbird Native Nursery, the Albertus Cottage landscape has been transformed from a lifeless lawn into a vibrant native wildflower demonstration garden that draws in both pollinators and people.

Community residents, city staff, school groups and visitors all enjoy spending time in the garden, learning about the ecological benefits of native plants, discovering the diverse pollinators that visit, and finding relaxation in its beauty. The Woman’s Club is dedicated to sharing the wealth of wildflowers through cuttings and collected seeds, distributing hundreds to community members to start their own native gardens at home. The City, too, has gained valuable knowledge about native plant maintenance and reduced watering needs — inspiration that’s already encouraging more native plantings throughout the area.

Education and outreach have become a cornerstone of the demonstration garden. The Women’s Club develops educational content and hosts propagation workshops, and has teamed up with local native bee expert Laura Zurro to create striking signage celebrating these important pollinators. Beyond raising awareness, these resources have helped local families feel more comfortable around native bees — giving them a new appreciation for their calm and non-aggressive nature.
