Garden Spotlight: Deltona Regional Library

The Seeds of Knowledge Library Demonstration Garden Grant brings the beauty and importance of Florida’s native plants to community spaces, creating opportunities for gathering and learning while supporting local biodiversity.
Our grants aren’t just for growing new gardens — they are also a great resource for expanding ones already in the ground, as the Deltona Regional Library shows so well. A recent recipient of our Seeds of Knowledge grant, the library is uniquely situated alongside the Lyonia Preserve and Environmental Center. The library’s newest garden — a wildflower meadow near its main entrance — joins a growing series of native plant gardens around the building complex.
With funding from the Foundation, the library teamed up with Lyonia Garden Keepers, West Volusia Audubon and the Florida Native Plant Society to transform a barren 400-square-foot space into a thriving native plant garden featuring more than 20 species. Over the summer, they hosted educational events teaching participants how to incorporate native plants into their own landscapes, shared educational materials, and gave out seeds.
Beyond the interactive programs, the garden’s prime location and educational signage introduce hundreds of library visitors to the benefits of native plants and the pollinators they support.
